What is "Helping Paws"
"Helping Paws" is a branch of UACC & serves a couple very important causes. In times of natural disaster (natural disaster response is a future goal) this branch will help in the recovery & reuniting of pets and families.
Helping Paws will also help the pets of our communities through established veterinary funds and supporting other established animal welfare groups. A portion of UACC's share of any animal welfare fundraisers will go to this fund.
"Helping Paws" disaster response aid
When homes are damaged pets can get loose, running away out of fear. They can get lost & lose their collars.
Whenever possible (watching approaching storms as an example), we will set up a Dedicated Page on our website where citizens located in the watch areas, can submit pictures & information about their pets; ahead of the approaching disaster. There will be a plan put in place to identify the pets who are safely evacuated & those who need to be found. We will also set up a Dedicated Page for any pets who are recovered with unknown families, with the hope their families will recognize them.
When UACC gets to location, we will come prepared to provide shelter, food & water to these lost pets.
Once set up, members of our mobile team will not only help the local citizens, they will actively watch the neighborhoods for injured or lost pets. These pets will be brought to our recovery station. Citizens who post to our dedicated page, will be notified if their animals arrive in our recovery station. Citizens can recover their lost animals from our recovery station.
We hope to help our citizen neighbors ease some measure of their stress & worry in their critical time of need. Sometimes in moments of great stress, a gentle purr from a furry family member or a slurp from our K9 best friend can help one feel a little bit better.
We will work with other rescue & recovery groups to identify pets who will need temporary care, in cases where families are injured, or help rehome any pets in the sad event their families are lost.
During the "Information Gathering" phase, prior to our mobile team traveling, we will gather as many supplies for the effected community as we can to take with us. Depending on the preliminary information of each disaster situation, it could take several days to get ready to leave. This readiness time frame will allow us to gather supplies while coordinating with First Responders & first arrival groups. This coordination period will be critical to maximize the aid UACC can provide.
During any type of disaster that can effects a community, everything is in a state chaos & confusion. Once we get to location we will immediately deliver any supplies we are transporting for the citizens & then set up for the "Helping Paws" aid.
It is difficult to think families might evacuate dangerous areas & leave their pets behind, however each situation is unique & we have no way of knowing the specifics around any family's evacuate situation. All we do know is, this is a time of panic for some, total chaos for most & in the haste of evacuating, pets can get away from their families. Like their families, their daily routine is interrupted. Our pets can feel our fear and unrest even though they can't understand it. Sometimes they get away & run out of fear. UACC does not pass judgment, this is not our purpose. We come to help.
The "Helping Paws" aid will be in addition to any help we can be the communities in their great time of need.
Once our 501(c)3 status is approved, all donations will be tax exempt. Until then, we will pay taxes on all donations raised.
